It Takes Two Healthy Joyful Whole People to Make One Healthy Joyful Whole Relationship

There is an American myth that two halves can come together in a loving relationship and become whole. However, contrary to cultural myths, close intimate relationships are not additive, where one half plus one half equals one. Close relationships are actually multiplicative. It is the whole Jerry McQuire myth problem: “You Complete Me!” This is all utter nonsense.

An Exercise for Exploring Your Self at Deeper Levels

Margaret,

I was just reading your blog about self-awareness and communication. Are there some more specific "homework" type things I can do? I need a lot of work. I have been in counseling for awhile and feel stuck. I am hoping to come get a couples reading sometime! I love reading your posts. You have an excellent way of explaining things! Thanks for your info!

Reader’s Question: Why Am I Thinking of My Ex?

Margaret Ruth, thought I am 25. I just got out of a long 2 1/2 year relationship and before that I was married for 3 1/2 yrs. I got a divorce that was final in June of 2006. And my late relationship ended in the end of March of this year. But my problem is I am thinking and having feelings pop up for my ex-husband. I mean maybe I just miss his friendship; we were friends since we were 12.

Reader's Question: There is Chemistry, and She is Ready, But He Won't Keep His Dates

Hi Margaret Ruth, I feel really confused. I just recently broke up with a long term boyfriend (one that I knew would not be one I was going to keep). Two weekends ago though I was out and I looked over at the bartender and realized I knew him from years ago. We used to work together. So I went over and asked if it was him. Jerik grabbed my hand, held it the whole time, and we talked and caught up for a while. There was instant chemistry and my heart had a tug I haven't felt for a long time.

When It Comes to Being in the Flow, I Think I am a Barnacle.

I realized lately that I am a barnacle. I find things I like, such as people, activities, ideas and possessions, grab on and settle in. On one level, I know I should be flowing with my energy and interests, or being in the flow of my life. The act and art of being Human is reflected in the verb: being. It is an evolving art to be yourself and developing your potentials. On another level, I hardly get rid of anything I like. So, I attach onto stuff and people I like and stay there. This has not always worked out for me.

There is an American myth that two halves can come together in a loving relationship and become whole. However, contrary to cultural myths, close intimate relationships are not additive but multiplicative. It is the whole Jerry McQuire problem: “You Complete Me!” This is all utter nonsense. When two not-emotionally-whole people -- roughly meaning people who still have emotional scars, insecurities, baggage and such – come together, whatever personal holes exist get magnified in intimate relationships. What happens is intensified holes, not wholes (sorry could. Not. Resist.

Authentic Relationships and Self Awareness: 4 Good Reasons

One of the crucial steps in maintaining genuine personal connections with others is possessing acute self awareness. Self awareness is the ability to perceive what is going on with you at all times and, this is important, on all your various levels of self. Because this skill is not taught to us very well in our cultures, many of us find this an extremely difficult assignment. But, if you desire authentic, meaningful and satisfying personal relationships in your life, you have to learn how to be self aware.

Psychics and Lost Pets - Some Thoughts

My friend Patty and I were talking this morning about the difficult issue of locating lost pets. Patty is a pet psychic (www.pattypetpsychic.net) and gets the desperate inquiries that come about this. I know I hate to do lost animals and so resist it. She has a different set of reasons for resisting these questions, but does resist nonetheless. I was thinking of a letter I got from a client of mine a while back. She discovered her own way of getting through the terrible, horrible experience of losing a loved pet. I like the way she used her intuition to lead her to know what to do.

Tarot Myths & Superstitions

Every year more and more people use tarot decks for study, meditation, divination or self discovery, but there are still many common myths, misunderstandings, and simple untruths surrounding Tarot cards. Here are some of the more persistent myths about the Tarot that seem to still be around. Notice though, that myths are not necessarily falsehoods. Myths can be symbolic allegories that seek to simplify or explain the human experience.
